His Highness the Sultan Sepuh of Cirebon, Pangeran Heru Rusyamsi Arianatareja, S.Psi., M.H., Chairman General of the National Council of the Republic of Indonesia (Dewan Adat Nasional Republik Indonesia – DANRI), emphasized that the strength of a nation is not determined solely by political stability and power, but by its ability to listen to, respect, and protect the voices of indigenous communities and the common people at the grassroots level.
Responding to current national political dynamics, the Sultan stated that Indonesia is a great nation built upon history, indigenous traditions, and the wisdom of Nusantara. Therefore, public policies must be firmly rooted in the lived realities of society, particularly those experienced by communities at the grassroots.
According to the Sultan Sepuh of Cirebon, a nation will stand strong when its leaders are willing to listen to the voices of indigenous communities and the concerns of ordinary people. He stressed that power exercised without justice would only create distance between the state and its citizens.
In his role as Chairman General of DANRI, an institution that coordinates and represents indigenous communities throughout Indonesia, the Sultan noted that indigenous peoples are often positioned merely as objects of policy rather than active participants in national and regional decision-making processes. Despite this, he emphasized that indigenous communities play a vital role in maintaining social harmony, preserving cultural heritage, and safeguarding the unity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
The Sultan affirmed that indigenous traditions should not be viewed as remnants of the past, but as moral and cultural foundations for the future of the nation. A strong state, he stated, is one that honors its indigenous heritage and upholds cultural values as part of national identity.
Furthermore, the Sultan Sepuh of Cirebon called on national and regional leaders to reaffirm the values of Pancasila as the guiding principles of governance. He underscored that humanity, social justice, and unity must remain at the core of every public policy implemented by the government.
He also highlighted the importance of the tangible and fair presence of the state for people at the grassroots level, especially indigenous communities that continue to face social inequality, land disputes, and limited access to legal protection.
The Sultan emphasized that the people must not exist only as numbers in statistics or administrative reports. Instead, he stated that the realities of people’s lives must be reflected in the conscience and policy decisions of the nation’s leaders.
In closing, the Sultan Sepuh of Cirebon, in his capacity as Chairman General of DANRI, expressed hope that Indonesia’s political dynamics will continue to evolve in a mature, peaceful, and inclusive manner. He stressed the importance of placing national unity and the greater public interest above narrow group or factional interests.
He conveyed confidence that Indonesia will become a great and dignified nation not because of the intensity of political contestation, but because of strong unity, justice, and respect for the indigenous cultures of Nusantara that form the foundation of the nation.(Tommy K)
